Helen Whelton joined the University of Leeds, in October 2013 as Dean of the School of Dentistry having previously been Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Head of the College of Medicine and Health, University College Cork.

She has held international research leadership positions in two organisations and has co-ordinated two large EU grants each having seven collaborating countries. She has been awarded >30 funded research grants and has published >70 scientific articles in internationally refereed journals and eight book chapters. In addition to publishing she was Principal Investigator of seven published national surveys and eleven regional surveys of oral health.

She has acted as a consultant to Ministries of Health in Canada, Malaysia, England and Sudan, for CDC in US and the World Health Organisation. She is also Chair of Clinical Research Facility Management Board and has served on the Health Research Board, Women’s Health Council and National Obesity Task Force.

Helen Whelton is a regular speaker at both national and international conferences as well as 40 invited lectures. She is a referee for international and national journals and for research grant funding bodies, has supervised nine PhD students and been an examiner for a further eleven.
